I have moved to Two Rivers-Dos Ríos. I am still teaching second grade and I am looking forward to working with the great staff that is here and meeting the wonderful students who will start next week. While I miss my Riverbend friends, change is good and helps you grow.
The Walk Jog-a-Thon is this Friday, May, 19th! We have been out jogging and walking to build our stamina.
Have you and your family been collecting pledges to earn money for Riverbend? This money provides funds for field trips, assemblies, family fun nights and class supplies. Please try and find a few people to support our school by pledging either per lap or a flat donation amount. It is supposed to be sunny and warm that day so have your child dress appropriately with good shoes and please no sandals. Sunscreen and a hat might be a good idea also. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle labeled with their name - or I can mark it when they get to school. Our class will run at 1:15 and you are welcome to come and walk or watch to support your child and our school. We hope to see you there!
Students wrote about a book they like and we took their pictures to go with it. This was our first project!
Math: Money, Addition, Subtraction
We’ve been using money to solve 3 digit addition and subtraction problems. These problems can have “un-grouping” what you would call borrowing or “regrouping” that is also called carrying. Your child should be able to identify and know the value of the following: a dollar bill, 5 dollar bill, quarter, dime, nickel and penny. If they don’t, please provide some extra practice at home. Reading and Writing We have been reading biographies. Ask your child what interesting people they have learned about. We are also beginning to write our own autobiographies this week! Birds We are observing the Decorah Bald Eagles and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology nesting cameras. The students love it! You can find them here: http://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/ http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/ Technology Students continue to improve their use of technology by using iPads almost daily in class. They are using Reflex Math and some are using Moby Max also. Several students have already made short how to movies with iMovie and the rest of the class is working on theirs. Please join us on Seesaw with the invitation I sent home or by reading the following and signing up. This year we're going to use a new tool to share what we're learning in class called Seesaw. Your child will have his or her own learning journal, and you can get notified when your child adds new items. It's completely private -- only you can see your child's journal outside of class. Click on https://app.seesaw.me/s/722-420-517 to sign up -- it takes just 30 seconds. Once you sign up, you can download the Seesaw Parent app for iPhone or Android, or access your child's journal on the web. Thanks! P.S. If you have more than one child using Seesaw, or have used Seesaw before, sign in and click on your profile icon > + Add Child to add this year's journal.
Today we learned how to use an app called Padlet. Students were able to use it to post about their favorite book. Ask your child about the process. I am hoping they had a great time learning about new technology.
Look how cool it is! For the next 3 weeks we will be reading Owl Moon and comparing it to several informational texts about owls. We will be learning all about owls! Ask your child what new and interesting facts they have learned.
Here are some phonics skills we are working on this week. These are our vocabulary words for the story, Around the Pond: Who's Been Here? by Lindsay Barrett George - bank, moss, shallow, edge, crater
